The orchestra

We offer two symphony orchestras where about 140 musicians who are students from all faculties, music students as well as graduates and hobby musicians. It is a constant challenge for us to keep a balance between making high level performances and encouraging amateur music and would be delighted to welcome you in our orchestras!

Symphony Orchestra „Schubert“: Monday 8.15-10.15pm

Activities 2012:

Between the 23rd and 26th of April 2012, we will perform four concerts where the “Mozart Requiem”, the “Stabat Mater” by Pergolesi and the 3rd Symphony “Rheinische” by Robert Schumann will be played. Due to popular demand, the Carmina Burana will be repeated in the main hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus on 18thJune 2012 and the work  „Le Sacre du Printemps“ by Igor Stravinsky will also be performed; the last Carmina Burana concert on the 14th of June 2011 was sold out one month beforehand! In our Christmas concert season between the 7th and the 11th of Dec. 2012, the Beethoven Orchestra will perform “The Creation” by Joseph Haydn and the Schubert Orchestra will perform the 2nd Symphony, “Lobgesang” by Felix Mendelssohn- Bartholdy.

Enough work ahead and we are looking forward to meeting you! You do not necessarily have to be a student of the Vienna University in order to participate!

Past Activities

From the 15th till the 20th of Oct. we went on a concert tour to Italy performing  the 5th Symphony and the Egmont Overture by Beethoven and the Rosamunde Overture by Schubert. In December the “Schubert Orchestra” played the „Symphony from the New World“ and the Mass in D major by Anton Dvorak and the “Beethoven Orchestra” played  the 4th symphony, the Alto Rhapsody by Johannes Brahms.  On the 14th of June 2011 we performed Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in the main hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus. In April, we played Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony, the Polovtsian Dances by Borodin and Handel’s masterwork “Dixit Dominus”.  In Dec. 2010 Beethoven´s 9th Symphony and the Christmas Oratorio by Saint-Saëns were performed.

In the academic year 2009/10 we performed G. F. Handel’s “Messiah” and the “Carmen Suite “and  “Te Deum” by G. Bizet. In March 2010 the “St. Johns Passion” by J. S. Bach, in May two solo concertos by Mozart and in June the Tchaikovsky violin concerto were played. The emphasis on chamber music was displayed in the performance of the „Petite Symphonie“ by Charles Gounod and the mass in e Minor by Bruckner.

Our repertoire contains Franz Schubert’s Symphony Nr. 5, “A German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms and the “Trois Nocturnes” by Claude Debussy; Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, the “Peer Gynt” Suite by Edvard Grieg, “Serenade” by Benjamin Britten, and the Christmas Oratorio by J. S. Bach and the Requiem by Verdi.
